I have started using cloth diapers! It's been a few weeks now, and I have to say, it's not as bad as some people think! In fact, it's not bad at all!!!
Back when I was pregnant with Wade, I considered it, but the cost of almost $500 was just WOW too much for me! And I just wasn't sure, so I didn't. Then came Ben along, and I thought about it again and, neh... And THEN came Eliana and AGAIN I thought about it. I don't know when bumgenious came out with the Econobums but my sister-in-law who had her baby 5 days after I had my baby girl, bought herself some of those. Twenty-four diapers, 6 covers for $100! (That is buying two kits for $50 each)
Finally, I found some I would try!
They are pretty basic.
You have the diaper inside. It's a prefold, but you don't fold it like old fashion. You fold it over like I did below.
And the cover. The ones that come in the kits are white. I bought an extra three. They are a little expensive buying them separate ( between $8 to $11).
There is how they look stuffed and folded!
They do work REALLY well! I have been very pleased with them. And for $99! I found them for that price online and free shipping. I have definitely been saving on diapers! I even tried the first day to put one on Ben. He didn't seem to think there was anything different. His poopies are a little too mature for me right now, but with a liner, I think that it wouldn't be bad.
But cloth diapers are a bit of an adventure, learning how to they work and, in my case, to keep away diaper rash.
I am a Desitin fan! I love Desitin! But you can't use Desitin with cloths. That is probably the thing that I do not like about cloths. Also, you do have to change you baby a little more often than disposables because of wetness. I did order some liners both disposable and nondisposable to see if it makes a difference.
To keep her dry I have been using corn starch. It works amazingly well! The only thing I read about cornstarch is that it shouldn't be used on yeast rashes since the starch will feed it. Other than that, works great. :)
I also made my own "wipes" with Viva towels and a mixture of coconut oil and water. Her butt loved that! My babies' butts have never liked regular wipes much. I need to make some more and this time I'm going to add some lavender to the water/oil mixture.
I don't use the cloths to go out, but that is what baby girl wears at home!

Update! I have to say I have fallen in LOVE with cloth diapering! I SO wish I had done this from the beginning. I could have saved us a few thousand dollars =/ At the time, to a large degree, the reason I did NOT try the cloth diapers was I had never heard of Econobum, by bumgenius. I don't know if they weren't around ( I don't think they were), but the thing is I just couldn't see myself spending $500 on something I was unsure if I'd like!
With the Econobums, well, NINETY NINE (99) $$$!!!! Hello! Yes! I was willing to spend $99 :)
The thing is, after having tried them, I really don't think the pocket ones, AIO, etc are really that much better than these. These really are awesome in my opinion, of course. And I feel, you truly save money because, hey, two or three large boxes of diapers IS $99.
And, I found the most amazing diaper liners to keep Eliana's bum dry? Even overnight, I touch her bum in the morning and it is barely moist. SERIOUSLY better than even the huggies or Pampers!
Okay so here is what I found: I found this great website called Sweet Bottoms and I bought two kinds of liners. For disposable I bought the Grovia Bioliners, and for reusable I bought Sweet Bottom's Fleece liners. Both work wonderfully keeping my baby's butt dry!
GroVia Bamboo liners. I use these at night since they keep Eliana's bum even drier than the fleece liners. I am amazed every time HOW dry her butt is even after a full night in her diaper!
Micro Fleece reusable liners (super soft!)
I mentioned above that I use corn starch. I'm also using Lavender essential oil for soothing and getting rid of any little butt irritation or diaper rash. What I do for that is coconut oil, one drop of Lavender and apply like an ointment on Eliana's bum. It works great! The liners have been keeping her so dry that I haven't had to put the starch on every single time, neither apply Lavender and coconut oil as much.
So, all in all, I have feelings of great success in my cloth diaper adventure!
Here is what it all looks like together.
With fleece liner...
With bamboo liner
Love my doTerra oils! (I need to buy more soon!) I never thought I'd say this, but I don't miss desitin anymore!
Love your post and I'm so glad you found some reasonably priced diapers! Thank you Emily Rose and Emily Lynn! I love Eliana's hair and how did Wade know about selfies? Too funny! I'm glad they now make better quality daipers. We had many mornings of everything WET! I even tried sewing my own with flannel material and I would sew old diapers between the layers of hourglass shaped flannel. I should of kept at the experimentation and started a business! LOL Love you all!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou could have LaDonna! Bumgemious was started by a lady ( I think mom) here in the US :)
DeleteOh My! I well remember the kids and the Flannel Diapers! It's not too late, Sis! You should market those!
ReplyDeleteGreat postings Lydiana.... It's been a long time since I've had time to even look and see if you've had the time to post anything new. So I got a nice update this afternoon - complete with wonderful pictures!
